I think the hardest part of integrating my passion of video games with my wife and emerging family is the idea that video games are isolationist. More so, that when I'm playing video games I can't just stop when I please to address a question, answer the door, or to check what that crashing noise is coming from the living room.

Some games are just live, like League of Legends or any online multiplayer, and I've come to accept that I'm not going to be able to play those games seriously for a long time. However, there are too many singleplayer games where I get punished for being in a cutscene by having the choice of either sitting through the whole thing while telling my wife, 'No. One second. Just.. seriously. One second. I can't skip this. Okay, no.. chicken's fine. Whatever. Why are you mad? Give me one second!' --or-- 'Well, shit. Pushing that button skipped the whole scene, now I have no idea why I'm fighting a giant bat, and my last save was 10 minutes before that cut scene because how could I know it would trigger 20 meters before the cave entrance?'
I can put down a book no problem. I can pause a movie. I can turn off the stove to see why someone is yelling outside my door. None of these really cost me much in terms of investment into that activity. Video games are the one activity where, rare split-screen multiplayer aside, I'm often punished for having anything outside that video game in that moment. Especially in what are supposed to be immersive story-driven games.

I don't know. I was just playing Banner Saga when this happened, and it's amazing that more games don't have a pause screen with an option to skip.
