The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring plays out in typical third-person adventure fashion, where you take the role of several key character and attempt fight your way to Mount Doom. Based more on the book than the Peter Jackson movie, Fellowship attempts to make the game more interesting by adding scenes that remained exclusively in written form (such as Frodo’s journey through the old forest or his singing at the Prancing Pony Inn.
Being half RPG and half action adventure, Fellowship lets you play as Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf at key moments of the story. These characters offer differing combat styles – Frodo can throw rocks and sneak around, Aragorn can slice his way through enemies and Gandalf can cast spells. It’s all fairly conventional console tripe, made more annoying than it should be by odd gameplay mechanics. Gandalf, for instance, has such pathetically slow spellcasting rates that he’ll be spending more of his time running away from danger than facing it with his gnarly magic.
For those of you who are big fans of not only the movie, but the novel as well, this might be a somewhat good starting point, but the truth is that you can find much better adventure games out there. For those of you like me … who just started reading or just read the books after seeing the film … this could be a good time waster that could offer you a little more story behind the first part of the literary masterpiece. Unfortunately, if you strip the name off of it, it becomes just yet another humdrum action game.
