How do I change the photo on my driving licence?

It’s quick and easy to change the photo on your driving licence, you can choose between applying online or by post.

To renew online, the DVLA states you’ll need to:

  • have a valid UK passport
  • be a resident of Great Britain – there’s a different process in Northern Ireland
  • pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
  • provide addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
  • have your driving licence (if you don’t have your driving licence you must say why as part of your application)
  • have your National Insurance number (if you know it)
  • not be disqualified from driving
Save another £1,000 by making sure all sections of your licence are correct

To apply by post, the DVLA states you’ll need:

  • a new passport type photo taken within the last month (don’t sign the back of the photo)
  • the photocard and paper counterpart of your current licence (if you’ve lost either, tick the relevant box on the D1 form)
  • a cheque or postal order for £17, payable to DVLA (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)

You must have your driving licence to hand at all times, so if your licence is lost or stolen you need to replace it as quickly as possible.

If your driving licence is stolen you must report it to the police immediately.

You can apply for a replacement licence online - just follow the steps on the GOV.UK website.

Your replacement photocard driving licence should arrive within a week.

To apply online you'll need:

  • To be a resident of Great Britain
  • To not be disqualified from driving for any reason
  • A debit or credit card to pay the £20 fee
  • A valid UK passport or other form of ID
  • Previous addresses for the last 3 years

Wherever possible, the DVLA will use an electronic copy of your passport photo, as long as you have a UK passport issued in the last 5 years. They will let you know if this isn't possible and ask you to send in a photo.

Applying by phone

You can apply by phone as long as none of your details have changed. You can’t apply this way if your licence is damaged, or if it expires in less than 56 days (or 90 days if it’s expiring for medical reasons).
